Japanese Maple Bonsai

What is a Japanese Maple Bonsai?

Without a doubt, the Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) bonsai is among the most popular of all bonsai trees, particularly in Japan. Along with elm, juniper, and pine, the Japanese Maple is one of the most frequently chosen for bonsai. The tree is native to China, Korea, and Japan. There are many different varieties of Japanese maple, and as you might expect the red varieties seem to be most popular as bonsai. They are a fairly easy tree to grow, and when trained in one of the many suitable bonsai styles the outcome is truly spectacular. It is a good choice for the novice bonsai artist, and they are easy to find. The Japanese maple is a hardy, deciduous tree when grown outdoors. When growing in the wild these types of trees can attain a height of greater than 30 feet.

The Japanese maple is a captivating plant as a bonsai because it displays beautiful colors throughout the growing season, from purples to magnificent reds. The bark and branches on young trees is usually green, and sometimes red, but will turn brown or light gray with age. The leaves will typically have 5 or more lobes.

The Japanese maple is not as tolerant or adaptable to different climates and environments as many other popular bonsai plants. Specifically they are not going to do well in extreme environments of either hot or cold. They do best where they can receive only morning and afternoon sun because the tree’s delicate leaves can burn if left under the intense mid-day sun. If a shady location is selected make certain that the plants continues to get a decent amount of light. Outdoor trees should be placed where they are protected from the wind to avoid wind scorch. If grown inside your home remember to provide sufficient levels of humidity and light. Inadequate humidity and low light levels will eventually kill them. Japanese Maple become very thirsty prior to a spurt of new growth and can dry out quickly so be sure to water them regularly (but don’t over water).
