Bonsai Pests: Spider mites may be a problem
Bonsai Pests: Spider mites
If you notice a very fine mesh between plant of bonsai leaves you may have mites. Outdoor bonsai such as Juniper are more susceptible to this than indoor bonsai. Mites can be seen with the naked eye. Inspect the web to see if you see movement. They look like very small spiders microspiders as I like to call them.
Why are bad for your bonsai
The mites feed on your bonsai with small mouthparts to suck the cell contents of plants. You may notice white or yellow foliage areas as a result. The leaves may fall because of the damage. Your bonsai may lose its color, have their stunted, or die as a result of the damage if significant numbers of mites.
Life Cycle
Mites emerging from eggs laid on the bonsai. In general, born in larva within the first 3-7 days after being deposited in your bonsai.
Prevention
Carefully inspect any new purchases for mites by looking bonsai the top and bottom of the leaves. They are the size of a period on a typewriter and can be introduced with contaminated soil as well.
Treatment
Predators
To control the situation manually, the introduction of insect predators such as ladybugs, lacewings and predatory mites are the best solution.
Pesticides
If you go the route of pesticides, make sure you have a miticide. The insecticides that are not specifically miticides do not work very well in the mite.
Conclusion
Spider mites can be detrimental to your bonsai, but if caught early the damage will be minimum.
