Bonsai Rock Planting

how long it take for a bonsai ficus to join a rock?
I have a ficus bonsai and Nightengale i cable to a rock then planted it in the sandy soil. How long before you link to the rock?
According to a recent book on bonsai got, the author said did the same, it took about three years before the root system was fixed to the rock. What he did was bury the pot, rock, and everyone in the garden, (just covering the rock) and dug until three years later, cleaning the floor of exposed roots, replanted, and cut the cables that were not rusted away. A ficus, of course, would not survive the winter unless you are in a hot climate, but stillgoing to take some years for this to happen. Hope you have patience, because that is what bonsai take.
